Calhoun is 2-8 against Gilmer County since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Calhoun Red Devils will face off against the Gilmer County Titans at 7:00 p.m. Calhoun has given up an average of 59.4 points per game this season, so hopefully the team got some defensive drills in this week.
Calhoun is headed into the game out to prove that what happened against St. Marys last Friday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Calhoun was beaten by St. Marys 81-46. The Red Devils were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 42-22.
Despite the loss, Calhoun had strong showings from Brennen Carpenter, who shot 44% from the field on his way to 20 points and six boards, and Cooper Morris, who went 5-for-11 to rack up 11 points and six rebounds. That was a full 43.5% of Calhoun's points, marking the fourth time in a row Carpenter has posted more than a third of the team's points. Gavin Hicks was another key player, putting up seven points.
Meanwhile, Gilmer County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 64-60 heartbreaker at the hands of Webster County.
Calhoun will need to focus on slowing down Kolten Holbert, one of several Gilmer County players who made an impact when they last played. He went 6-for-7 en route to 21 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. With that strong performance, Holbert is now averaging an impressive 15 points per game. Another player making a difference was Jacob Mick, who had 16 points.
Gilmer County's loss dropped their record down to 6-16. As for Calhoun, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 6-16.
Tuesday's matchup will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Carpenter and Mick. Carpenter has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 12.3 points, 1.5 steals, and 6.9 boards. For his part, Mick has averaged 15.3 points, 1.7 steals, and 2.9 assists.
Calhoun came up short against Gilmer County when the teams last played back in February, falling 56-44. Can Calhoun avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
