Baseball Game Preview: St. John Fighting Herald vs. Mathews Mustangs

The St. John Fighting Herald will venture away from home to square off against the Mathews Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in St. John's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last four games.

St. John is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They blew past Chalker 21-1 on Wednesday. The Fighting Herald have beaten the Wildcats the last six times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Wildcats has come to flipping the script.

St. John let Anthony Severino and Ezra Campbell run wild. Severino went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and five RBI, while Campbell went a perfect 4-for-4 with six RBI, three runs, and two doubles. Severino is becoming a predictor of St. John's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Will Anderson, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.

They weren't the only one making solid contact: St. John kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 22 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matchups.

Fans were treated to a battle of the Mustangs on Wednesday. Mathews came up short against Grand Valley, falling 9-3. The defeat continues a trend for Mathews in their meetings with Grand Valley: they've now lost three in a row.

Mathews' loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for St. John, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.

Everything went St. John's way against Mathews when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as St. John made off with a 12-1 win. Will the Fighting Herald repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
