La Crosse Central hasn't had much luck against Holmen recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Riverhawks will head out on the road to challenge the Vikings at 7:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, La Crosse Central came up short against Onalaska and fell 3-1.
La Crosse Central was was forced to take the loss, but they sure made Onalaska work for it, especially in the third set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 25-18.
Despite the loss, La Crosse Central had strong showings from Gabriella Zeeb, who had 11 digs and three aces, and Celia Christopherson, who had 30 digs and seven assists.
Meanwhile, Holmen put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over Aquinas.
While Holmen won a shutout, things came down to the wire in the third set they played. The final score came out to 25-14, 25-14, 25-23.
La Crosse Central better keep an eye on Sadie Mayer. She was instrumental in Holmen's win, getting 11 assists and five aces. Those five aces gave Mayer a new career-high.
Holmen was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 14 aces. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Aquinas only served two.
Holmen's victory bumped their record up to 21-0. As for La Crosse Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-11.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's match: La Crosse Central has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 5.4 aces per game. However, it's not like Holmen struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
La Crosse Central couldn't quite get it done against Holmen in their previous matchup back in September as they fell 3-1. Can the Riverhawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
