St. John Bosco and JSerra Catholic (ranked three and 81 in the MaxPreps national rankings respectively) squared off in a high-profile contest. St. John Bosco was the clear victor by a 42-20 margin over JSerra Catholic. Given St. John Bosco's advantage in MaxPreps' national football rankings (they are ranked third, while JSerra Catholic is ranked 81st), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
St. John Bosco can attribute much of their success to Caleb Sanchez, who threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.7 yards per attempt. Owen Tomich did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 116 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The team's defense also helped out by holding JSerra Catholic to a paltry 143 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to St. John Bosco's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out six times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Dutch Horisk and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran took a serious blow against Mater Dei on Thursday, falling 55-13. Orange Lutheran was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 38-0.
St. John Bosco's victory bumped their season record to 8-1 while Orange Lutheran's loss dropped theirs to 5-4.
Everything came up roses for St. John Bosco against Orange Lutheran when the teams last played back in November of 2022 as the team secured a 49-14 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for St. John Bosco since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
