The Tupelo Golden Wave will head out to take on the Saltillo Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tupelo is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
Tupelo barely beat Germantown the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Tupelo's pitchers stepped up to hand Germantown a 6-0 shutout on Friday. Six seems to be a good number for the Golden Wave as the team scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Braxton Tate was incredible, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Tyler Johnson, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
Tate wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Tupelo kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Saltillo came tearing into Friday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 5-0 victory over the Red Raiders.
Not much got past BEN MONAGHAN, who gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks to keep Shannon off the board. The dominant performance gave MONAGHAN a new career-high in strikeouts.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on COOPER BURLESON, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of LEVIN DARSEY, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Tupelo pushed their record up to 9-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Saltillo, their record now sits at 6-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Tupelo has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Saltillo struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Tupelo's way against Saltillo when the teams last played back in February, as Tupelo made off with an 11-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Tupelo since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
