Fans got a thrill when Deriq King and Jamond Manuel connected against Pearland. The longest such play in 5A Region III District 22 this season, the connection resulted in 86 yards.
Manvel moved up to 104 from 155 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Mavericks climbed the ranks as a result of defeating the Oilers 42-7.
Manvel's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. King threw for 376 and 4 touchdowns and Manuel had 185 yards receiving. On the ground King contributed 145 yards. Gary Haynes helped Manvel's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 89 yards.
He went 19-26 with 1 interception.
King was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 145 yards on 19 carries as Kirk Martin's team bested Pearland. Manuel also contributed to the rushing game with 10 yards on the ground.
The Mavericks' King and Haynes have formed a dream team this season, leading 5A Region III District 22 in both passing and receiving yards. 5-10 quarterback King has thrown for 1,721 yards this season, while Haynes has 29 catches for 581 yards. Alvin's Eric Olszewski leads the league in rushing yards with 766.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Tony Heath's team takes on Dobie. At the moment, the Oilers are in first, while the Longhorns are in third.
Manvel added to the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Pearland, 42-7. This was the team's seventh consecutive win.
