The Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They managed a 51-47 victory over Key West. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Archbishop McCarthy found their leader in underclassman Robert Kerns, who rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on only six carries, and also threw for 115 yards and two touchdowns on only ten passes. Damien Grant was another key contributor, rushing for 133 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.4 yards per carry.
Despite the defeat, Key West had strong showings from Walson Morin, who rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries, and Jaden Fox, who rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Morin really tore up the turf during one magnificent 80-yard run. Another player making a difference was Adrian Mira, who rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries.
Archbishop McCarthy's win was their seventh straight at home (dating back to last season), which pushed their record up to 9-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-7 Somerset Prep and 1-9 Dr. Joaquin Garcia (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 22.1% over those games). As for Key West, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-7.
Archbishop McCarthy does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Key West also has no future games currently scheduled.
