Doherty hasn't had much luck against Discovery Canyon recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Spartans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Thunder at 6:00 p.m.
Last Tuesday, Doherty came up short against Lutheran and fell 3-1. The Spartans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Doherty was was forced to take the loss, but they sure made Lutheran work for it, especially in the third set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-18, 13-25, 26-24, 25-20.
Meanwhile, Discovery Canyon waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They put the hurt on the Grizzlies with a sharp 3-0 victory.
Discovery Canyon never let Mesa Ridge on the board, but things got pretty close in the third set. The final score came out to 25-15, 25-17, 25-23.
Discovery Canyon had a senior duo take command as Joseph Dang had 18 digs and one assist and Kaleb Valenzuela had 18 assists and three digs. Those 18 digs set a new season-high mark for Dang.
Discovery Canyon couldn't miss and finished the game having scored on 42.7% of their attack attempts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hitting percentage total in three consecutive games.
Doherty's defeat dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Discovery Canyon, they pushed their record up to 8-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Thursday's contest: Doherty hasn't let much over the net this season, having averaged 8.1 blocks per game. However, it's not like Discovery Canyon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.3 blocks. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
