The Island Coast Gators's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They were outmatched by Gateway at home and fell 76-9. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Island Coast has scored all season.
Despite the loss, Island Coast saw an underclassman step up: Samarrah Desir scored eight points.
Gateway's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from V'Davrielle Johnson, who scored 14 points along with nine steals and five assists. Johnson is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Kenyah Moss was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Island Coast has not been sharp recently, as they've lost eight of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. As for Gateway, their win was their ninth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-2.
Island Coast won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Ida Baker at 6:00 p.m. on January 19th. Ida Baker presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Island Coast in Florida (Ida Baker is ranked 248th, while Island Coast is ranked 589th). As for Gateway, they will be playing at home against Cypress Lake at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
