The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Aaron Winfield, who rushed for 47 yards and two scores. He didn't just play on offense: he also picked up a sack and made one tackle. La Joya Community also got help from Alexander Tellez, who showed off his sure hands for 81 receiving yards.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 1.2 yards per carry. The team can thank Anthony Maccree for the heroic effort on defense: he. The dominant display was nothing new: La Joya Community has now limited their opponent to fewer and fewer yards per carry in three consecutive contests.
La Joya Community's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as five different players picked up one apiece. They got some further help from Maccree: he picked up a sack and made ten total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Agua Fria). They put the hurt on Westview with a sharp 41-20 victory on Friday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Owls.
Agua Fria's win came from a few key players La Joya Community will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Taj Smith II, who threw for 293 yards and six touchdowns while picking up 11.7 yards per attempt. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in passer rating (143.8). Adrian Leyva did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 117 receiving yards.
Agua Fria didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Xavier Daniels, Dylan Salcido, Oscar Hernandez, and Maddox Henderson picked up one apiece. Another thorn in Westview's side was Martin Ndumnjeck, who picked up a sack and made 11 total tackles.
La Joya Community's defeat dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Agua Fria, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 3-5.
La Joya Community took a serious blow against Agua Fria when the teams last played back in September of 2021, falling 43-0. Thankfully for the Fighting Lobos, Brian Fullwood (who rushed for 114 yards and a pair of TDs on only ten carries, and also caught one score) won't be suiting up this time.
