Velma Jackson has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Pascagoula Panthers at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Velma Jackson earned a 54-43 victory over St. Andrew's Episcopal. 54 seems to be a good number for Velma Jackson as the team scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.
Velma Jackson's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Cameron Tate, who scored 17 points along with four steals, and Cornell Bacon, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Bacon continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Jamarquez Davis was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Meanwhile, Pascagoula waltzed into their game Tuesday with nine straight wins but they left with ten. They blew past Bay 75-19 on the road. Considering Pascagoula has won five matchups by more than 22 points this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Velma Jackson's win bumped their record up to 6-7. As for Pascagoula, their victory was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-1.
Everything went Velma Jackson's way against Pascagoula in their previous meeting back in December of 2014 as Velma Jackson made off with a 45-24 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Pascagoula's Montrell Shepard, who scored 16 points. Now that he won't be playing on Wednesday, will it be that much easier for Velma Jackson to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
