The William Campbell Generals will venture away from home to challenge the Nelson County Governors at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
On Friday, William Campbell didn't have quite enough to beat Altavista and fell 10-9. The Generals haven't had much luck with the Colonels recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Nelson County). Their pitcher stepped up to hand Chatham a 14-0 shutout on Friday. With that victory, the Governors brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
Kevin Knight made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Nelson County is 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 3-5 otherwise. Knight was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Caleb Thompson was incredible, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Hank Simpson, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
Nelson County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
The win snapped Nelson County's losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 6-6 record. As for William Campbell, their loss dropped their record down to 3-12.
William Campbell suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to Nelson County when the teams last played back in April. Can the Generals avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
