Tohatchi (N.M.) jumped out to an early lead against
Crownpoint (N.M.) and never looked back on the way to a 16-7 victory on Saturday.
The Cougars put up eight points in the opening frame. Tohatchi scored on a rushing touchdown.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run in the first quarter, THS led 8-7 at the half.
The Cougars expanded their lead to nine points entering the fourth quarter. Tohatchi scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown run by
Luke Gibson.
THS's most effective player was Gibson. He ran for one touchdown. He has now scored two touchdowns on the season.
The Eagles' lone touchdown came on a 60-yard pass in the second quarter.
The Cougars had struggled this season, allowing 30.3 points per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which Crownpoint took, 68-28.
The win was a nice bounce back for Tohatchi, which lost to Ramah last week, 54-0.
CHS (3-6) will play a 2A District 1 game against Zuni next week. The Thunderbirds go into the week with a record of 4-4.
