After flying high against the Spalding Jaguars on Friday, the Monroe Golden Tornadoes came back down to earth. Monroe fell 57-50 to Athens Christian on Saturday. The match was a 34-34 toss-up at halftime, but Monroe was outscored by Athens Christian in the second.
Despite the defeat, Monroe saw an underclassman step up: Kie'Aundria Acree scored 30 points along with 6 assists. Acree scored a full 60% of Monroe's points, the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Ciarra Lunsford, who scored 6 points along with 10 rebounds and 7 assists.
Monroe's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Athens Christian, the victory for they keeps them at an undefeated 6-0.
Monroe will be playing in front of their home fans against Terrell County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Athens Christian is on the road again on Saturday and play against Dawson County. Dawson County will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 99th, while Athens Christian is ranked seventh).
