Soldotna has gone a perfect 10-0 against Homer recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Stars will take on the Mariners at 6:00 p.m. Soldotna will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
Soldotna is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Kenai Central, who was ranked fifth at the time (Soldotna was ranked tenth). The Stars walked away with a 7-4 victory over the Kardinals on Saturday.
Trenton Ohnemus looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk).
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tucker Blough, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May of 2024.
Meanwhile, Homer hadn't done well against Kenai Central recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Mariners came out on top against the Kardinals by a score of 12-7. The Mariners' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Cohen Boyd was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Preston Stanislaw, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs.
Soldotna's record is now 6-9-2. As for Homer, their record now sits at 7-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Soldotna has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Homer struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Soldotna took their win against Homer when the teams last played on Monday by a conclusive 17-7 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Stars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
