AAA Southeastern recap Nov. 7, 2012
Oscar Smith extended the longest winning streak in AAA Southeastern this week by beating King's Fork, 42-35. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.
Lakeland and Nansemond River played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Lakeland eventually emerging with a 14-9 victory.
Grassfield's dynamic duo of Blake LaRussa and Isaiah Harper proved tough for Deep Creek to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. LaRussa threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns and Harper had 66 yards receiving. Paris Smith helped Grassfield's passing attack out by catching five balls for 64 yards.
Josh Marriner was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 20 carries, he ran for 210 yards as Western Branch defeated the Hornets. Donte Shepard also contributed to the rushing game with 52 yards on the ground.
Grassfield's LaRussa and Smith have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading AAA Southeastern in both passing and receiving yards. LaRussa has thrown for 1451 yards this season, while Smith, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 33 catches for 722 yards. The Bruins' Marriner leads the league in rushing yards with 1892.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Cavaliers take on the Bulldogs. Lakeland is in fourth place, while King's Fork is in fifth place.
Hickory took down Great Bridge 51-10 last week, the largest margin of any game.
