I Section I recap October 22, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Highland, who defeated 11th ranked Basha, 24-21. Casey Cole during the win.
The Hawks added to the longest winning streak in I Section I this week by beating the Bears, 24-21. The win marks fifth in a row for the Highland.
Basha's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Zach Werlinger threw for 185 and 3 touchdowns and Doc O'Connor had 102 yards receiving. On the ground Rajhan Meriwether chipped in 124 yards. Meriwether helped Basha's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 39 yards.
Bryce Perkins was a passing and rushing force as Chandler beat Perry. He completed 12 passes for 247 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 8 yards. Perkins' favorite target this week was Dionte Sykes, who caught 5 passes for 91 yards.
He went 15-22 with 1 interception.
O'Connor was the best receiver in the league this week as Bernie Busken's team lost to Pete Wahlheim's team. O'Connor racked up 5 receptions for 102 yards. Meriwether helped Basha's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 39 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Bears' Werlinger and O'Connor have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-2 quarterback Werlinger has thrown for 2,354 yards this season, while O'Connor has 46 catches for 802 yards. The Hawks' Ryan McCord leads the league in rushing yards with 544.
The most important game in I Section I this week will be the match up between the Wolves and Basha. Chandler enters the game ranked third in the state, while the Bears ranks 15th.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Hamilton takes on Highland. The Huskies have allowed 150 points this season, while the Hawks have given up 141. Hamilton allowed 0 points last week as it bested Gilbert.
There should be lots of points scored when Shawn Aguano's team and Basha face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Wolves comes in having scored 298 this season, while the Bears have scored 280. Chandler scored 56 points last week as it defeated the Pumas.
Perry lost to the Wolves 56-10 last week, the largest margin of any game.
