The San Juan Broncos will face off against the Duchesne Eagles at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. San Juan is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.3 runs per game this season.
San Juan heads in on the heels of a playoff contest on Saturday. They fell 7-4 to Grand County. The Broncos' defeat signaled the end of their eight-game winning streak.
Branten Bethea made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Talon Mendoza, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Duchesne made easy work of North Summit on Saturday and carried off a 15-1 win.
Connor Karren was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Duchesne is undefeated when Karren posts three or more hits, but 9-14 otherwise.
In other batting news, Duchesne got a massive performance out of Nashden Goodliffe, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Goodliffe is becoming a predictor of the Eagles' success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 5-1 (and 7-13 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Rylann Butler, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and six RBI.
Duchesne lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. They are 2-1 when they post two or more home runs.
Duchesne's victory bumped their record up to 12-14. As for San Juan, their loss dropped their record down to 20-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. San Juan has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Duchesne struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went San Juan's way against Duchesne when the teams last played two weeks ago, as San Juan made off with a 17-6 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Broncos since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
