The Amherst Broncos will take on the Sutton Mustangs at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday. Amherst is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55 points per game this season.
While Amherst's victory against Overton wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Broncos sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 48-45 win over the Eagles on Friday. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Amherst's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Brynley Mattox, who almost dropped a double-double with 14 points and nine assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Vavra, who posted 11 points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Amherst smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 12 consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Sutton had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24.2 points) and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They put the hurt on the Trojans with a sharp 49-23 victory. The Mustangs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 14 matchups by 20 points or more this season.
Sutton's win came from a few key players that Amherst will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kyla Griess, who scored eight points and seven boards. Those seven rebounds gave her a new career-high. Kali White was another key player, putting up ten points and six boards.
Amherst's win bumped their record up to 19-6. As for Sutton, their victory bumped their record up to 20-7.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Amherst has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 34.7 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Sutton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.4 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Amherst couldn't quite get it done against Sutton in their previous meeting back in February of 2022 as they fell 57-44. Can the Broncos avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
