Downey is 0-3 against North since March of 2015 but things could change on Saturday. The Vikings will look to defend their home field against the Saxons at 11:00 a.m. Downey is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Downey will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs last Tuesday, then bounced right back against Paramount on Tuesday. The Vikings put the hurt on the Pirates with a sharp 17-6 victory. The Vikings haven't had any issues with the Pirates recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.
The team relied heavily on Sophia Hernandez, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Delilah Navarro, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Hernandez wasn't the only one making solid contact: Downey kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, North was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They came up short against South, falling 12-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Saxons have suffered against the Spartans since April 24, 2019.
Corina Alvillar made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Gilardi, who went 2-for-5 with one triple and one RBI.
North's loss dropped their record down to 6-14. As for Downey, their victory bumped their record up to 11-4.
North's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Downey hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .353. It's a different story for North, though, as they've only averaged .257. Will they be able to contain Downey's hitters?
Downey couldn't quite get it done against North in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 as they fell 5-0. Will the Vikings have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
