La Mirada (Calif.) defeated
Artesia (Lakewood, Calif.) 42-13 while riding the arm of
Gerry Myres, who tossed five touchdown passes.
After taking the lead on a Myres touchdown pass to
James Myres in the first quarter, the Matadores led 26-7 at the half.
La Mirada expanded its lead to 22 points entering the fourth quarter. LM scored two times in the third, including once on a Myres touchdown pass to
Tyler Luatua.
Francisco Galan made a difference for the Pioneers. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to five on the year.
Led by Luatua, the Matadores came in allowing an average of 23.3 points per game this season. The defense really stepped up, holding Artesia well below its season average of 23.7 points scored per game.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 42-0 win for LM.
With the win the Matadores extended their winning streak to four games.
In a Suburban game next week Artesia (1-6) takes on Bellflower, and La Mirada (6-1) will go up against Glenn also in a Suburban game.
