Sunflower recap September 17, 2013
South was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after losing to West. The Falcons came in at 22 in the state poll after placing at number 28 last week.
Lawrence Free State was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from fifth to second in Sunflower. The Firebirds defeated Shawnee Mission Northwest 20-3 earlier in the week.
Parker Evans made the biggest impact on defense this week as Olathe East topped Northwest. He forced 2 fumbles.
Landry Hodges was a passing and rushing force as Leavenworth bested North. He completed 14 passes for 169 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 36 yards. Hodges' key target this week was Isaiah Ross, who caught 6 passes for 77 yards.
Connor Leach threw for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was 8-16 with 3 interceptions.
Ross was the best wideout in the league this week as the PIONEERS defeated the Indians. Jason Randall helped Leavenworth's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 60 yards.
Randall was the best running back in the league this week. In 16 carries, he ran for 147 yards as Leavenworth defeated North.
Leach put up the best numbers through the air as the Hawks topped the Ravens. Leach's favorite target this week was Connor Alexander, who caught 2 passes for 40 yards.
Olathe East's Leach and Alexander have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Sunflower in both passing and receiving yards. Leach has thrown for 240 yards this season, while Alexander, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 4 catches for 89 yards. Mark Littrell's team's Randall leads the league in rushing yards with 222.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Lawrence Free State takes on Jeff Meyers' team. At the moment, Robert Lisher's team is in second, while the Hawks are in sixth.
Don Simmons' team fell to the PIONEERS 33-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
