For the first time this season, Cordova will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will host the McClatchy Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cordova is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Cordova blew Rio Americano out of the water the last time the pair played, but two weeks ago Rio Americano got their revenge. Cordova fell just short of Rio Americano by a score of 8-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Lancers have suffered since March 5, 2024.
Becca Lee made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jessica Fergoso, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Lee wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Cordova kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. This was only their first loss (out of three games) when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McClatchy). They came out on top against Rosemont by a score of 7-2 on Wednesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Lions.
Lily Arbizo looked comfortable as she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk).
On the hitting side, Jayeliza Rogers was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. Those runs were her first of the season. Maia Jacobs was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in both of her plate appearances.
The victory got McClatchy back to even at 2-2. As for Cordova, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-4.
Cordova's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's contest. Cordova has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for McClatchy, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Cordova continue to outrun the ball?
Cordova suffered a grim 6-0 defeat to McClatchy when the teams last played back in March of 2020. Will Cordova have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
