Ryan Payerle and Trevor Sweeney provided fans with a highlight when they connected against St. Joseph. The connection was good for 80 yards, the longest such play in Southwestern Michigan - West this season.
Mattawan extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Bears, 49-14. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
Mattawan's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Payerle threw for 109 and two touchdowns and Sweeney had 109 yards receiving. On the ground Sweeney chipped in 168 yards.
Lakeshore's JOHNNY NATE and HAROLD WIGGINS have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. NATE has thrown for 1035 yards this season, while WIGGINS, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 36 catches for 541 yards. Sweeney from Matt Stephens's team leads the league in rushing with 896 yards.
A big matchup in Southwestern Michigan - West this week will be when Portage Central takes on the Wildcats. The Mustangs are currently in third, while Mattawan is in first.
Portage Northern moved up to 67 from 94 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Huskies were able to make the jump by beating Niles 55-22.
