The Leavitt Hornets will square off against the Erskine Academy Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Leavitt is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.
Leavitt is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Buckfield, who was ranked 23rd at the time (Leavitt was ranked fifth). The Hornets came up short against the Bucks on Thursday, falling 8-2. The loss was the Hornets' first of the season.
Leavitt saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hailey Cyr, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that Cyr has launched this season.
Fans were treated to a battle of the Eagles on Wednesday. Erskine Academy took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of Lincoln Academy. Erskine Academy has struggled against Lincoln Academy recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.
Adalyn Glidden spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and six unearned) runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Jilian Desjardins was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Lillian Clark was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Erskine Academy now has a losing record of 5-6. As for Leavitt, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 11-1.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Leavitt hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .329. However, it's not like Erskine Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .329. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Leavitt was able to grind out a solid victory over Erskine Academy in their previous meeting on May 2nd, winning 11-7. Do the Hornets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
