Breese Central is a perfect 4-0 against Metro-East Lutheran since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the Knights at 4:30 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Breese Central took a 11-run defeat the last time they faced off against Columbia, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Eagles 8-6. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Cougars as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.
Meanwhile, Metro-East Lutheran had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 6-5 W against the Piasa Birds.
Jacob Kober was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up five earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Those four hits gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Drake Luebbert was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. He has become a key player for Metro-East Lutheran: the team is 9-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Thijson Heard, who went 1-for-5 with one home run and two RBI.
Metro-East Lutheran kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.
Breese Central's win bumped their record up to 13-9. As for Metro-East Lutheran, their victory bumped their record up to 13-7.
Breese Central came out on top in a nail-biter against Metro-East Lutheran when the teams last played back in May of 2023, sneaking past 8-7. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Knights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
