Baseball Recap: Merritt Island Makes It Five in a Row at Home

The Merritt Island Mustangs got the win against the Wheaton Academy Warriors on Friday by a conclusive 13-3. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won eight contests by eight runs or more so far this season.

Braeden Rouleau made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grant Arnold, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Ty Brandes also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Merritt Island always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .607. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wheaton Academy only posted an OBP of .292.

Merritt Island pushed their record up to 16-6 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Wheaton Academy, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Merritt Island will head out to square off against Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Wheaton Academy, they will challenge Ridgewood at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
