Cambridge Academy is 2-8 against Laurens Academy since December of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The two teams will face off at 4:00 p.m. on February 10th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
On Friday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Cambridge Academy beat Richard Winn Academy 32-28.
Cambridge Academy's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alex Cockrell, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. Cockrell is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jillian Mapes, who scored six points along with ten rebounds and eight steals.
Meanwhile, Laurens Academy had already won 21 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.5 points), and they went ahead and made it 22 on Friday. They came out on top against Wardlaw Academy by a score of 35-24. Given Laurens Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 76th, while Wardlaw Academy is ranked 208th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Cambridge Academy is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season. As for Laurens Academy, their victory bumped their record up to 22-1.
Cambridge Academy came up short against Laurens Academy in their previous matchup last Friday, falling 47-41. Can Cambridge Academy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
