St. Mary hasn't had much luck against Mesquite recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Knights will head out on the road to challenge the Wildcats at 3:45 p.m. St. Mary's is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
St. Mary's is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since March 13th on Monday. They came up short against Crismon, falling 14-4.
Luis Mejia made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Mikey Nanez was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Mesquite got the win against Marcos de Niza on Wednesday by a conclusive 12-2. The Wildcats might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Cooper Leroy was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Mesquite got a massive performance out of Kash Rogers, who scored three runs while going 2-for-4. What's more, Rogers posted two doubles, the most he's had since back in March. Another player making a difference was Gunnar Gift, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Mesquite hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in 14 consecutive games.
Mesquite's record is now 12-5. As for St. Mary's, their loss dropped their record down to 12-6.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. St. Mary's hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .314. However, it's not like Mesquite struggles in that department as they've averaged .392. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
St. Mary's might still be hurting after the 12-1 defeat they got from Mesquite in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Knights avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
