Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa, Calif.) 21-14 on Saturday.
The Cougars led 13-7 at halftime, but the Cardinals recaptured the lead on a touchdown with 11:00 to go in the third. Rancho Cotate finally took the lead for good as
Jalon Luque ran for a touchdown with 2:00 to go in the third quarter.
RC expanded its lead to seven points entering the fourth quarter. The Rohnert Park school scored two times in the third, including once on a Luque touchdown run.
The loss snapped Cardinal Newman's 8-game winning streak.
Keaton Dunsford played well for CN. The junior quarterback ran for one touchdown.
Luque played well for the Cougars in the victory. The senior running back ran for one touchdown. He has now scored 18 touchdowns on the season.
Rancho Cotate came into the game allowing 7.9 points per game.
The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which the Santa Rosa school took, 28-7.
The defeat comes as a step back for Cardinal Newman, which notched a 20-10 victory over Windsor in its previous outing.
Rancho Cotate (9-0) goes up against Santa Rosa in a North Bay game matchup next week, while Cardinal Newman (8-1) locks horns with Casa Grande also in a North Bay game.
