Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 14 to 5 on the offensive boards, a fact the Springport Spartans proved on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Reading 44-41. That's another feather in the cap for Springport, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Maddux Locke was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with five assists and five steals. Locke is crushing the steal category: she's posted at least three every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Chloey Speer, who scored four points along with six steals.
When it comes to explaining why Reading lost, one person who can't be blamed is Aubree Ervans. Despite the final result, she scored 20 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Maggie Santure, who scored 12 points.
Springport's win bumped their record up to 10-3. As for Reading, they now have a losing record at 7-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Springport won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against the Comets at 5:30 p.m. on February 2nd. Hanover-Horton is coming into the match hot, having won their last three games. As for Reading, they will head out on the road to face off against the Chargers at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Union City is coming into the match on a six-game losing streak.
