The Frederick Douglass Broncos will square off against the South Oldham Dragons at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
Frederick Douglass is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Kentucky's top teams: Bryan Station, who was ranked 14th at the time (Frederick Douglass was ranked 20th). The Broncos won by a run and slipped past the Defenders 2-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Broncos have posted since April 17th.

Savannah Wombles made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
In other batting news, Jarynn Bowman was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but South Oldham ultimately got the result they hoped for on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out North Oldham 5-4. Winning may never get old, but the Dragons sure are getting used to it with their fourth in a row.
Like Frederick Douglass, South Oldham also got a great game from a two-way player: Kaylee Fitzner. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over 7.2 innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts Fitzner has posted since back in April. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grace Turner, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double.
Frederick Douglass has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for South Oldham, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-10.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Frederick Douglass hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like South Oldham struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.7 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other softball content.
