III Section I recap Sept. 26, 2012
Higley was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from 11th to seventh in III Section I. The Knights vanquished Vista Grande 38-6 earlier in the week.
Williams Field extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Amphitheater, 56-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Black Hawks.
Nick Elliott provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Casa Grande topped Santa Cruz Valley. He completed six passes for 65 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 191 yards. Elliott's favorite target this week was Mitchell Thomas, who caught five passes for 51 yards.
Jeddediah Fagg threw for 102 yards and three touchdowns. He was six-seven with zero interceptions.
Joey Howard was the best wideout in the league this week as Sahuarita defeated Cholla. Howard racked up three receptions for 82 yards. Sam Mitchell helped Sahuarita's passing attack out by catching two balls for 32 yards.
Byron Bourgogne made the biggest impact on defense this week as Higley beat the Spartans. The 5-foot-11 senior racked up 1.5 sacks.
Matt Guida was the most productive running back in III Section I this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 215 yards as Queen Creek bested the Chargers. Teammate Weston Barlow added to the ground attack by rushing for 102 yards.
5-foot-11 quarterback Marcel Renteria of Nogales is the league leader in passing yards this season with 831. He has also thrown 11 touchdowns. On the ground, the Bulldogs' Guida has rushed for 927 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Matt Bushman. The Sabino star has 18 catches for 408 yards.
Guida of the Queen Creek is only 73 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Sahuarita takes on the Apaches. David Rodriguez's team is in second place, while Nogales is in fifth place.
Joe Germaine's team took down Apache Junction 63-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Guida in the win.
