Menendez and Matanzas are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2018, but not for long. Having just played yesterday, the Menendez Falcons will head out on the road to face off against the Matanzas Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on January 24th. Menendez is coming into the match on a four-game losing streak.
Menendez fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against Harvest Community on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Warriors 65-59. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Meanwhile, Matanzas pushed their score all the way to 58 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 63-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of Cocoa. Matanzas has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Rya'sir Jefferson put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 25 points along with two steals. That was a full 43.1% of Matanzas' points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Tariq Shakir, who scored 15 points.
Menendez now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Matanzas, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-12.
Menendez didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Matanzas in their previous matchup back in January of 2023, but they still walked away with a 78-73 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Menendez since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
