Sand Point is 7-2 against Newhalen since January of 2016, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. Having just played yesterday, the Sand Point Eagles/Lady Eagles will jump right back in to play the Newhalen Malamutes at 2:00 p.m. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Sand Point had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They walked away with a 44-37 victory over Chief Ivan Blunka on Thursday.
Among those leading the charge was Rowdy Tripp, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 15 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Tyler Gundersen, who scored eight points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, even though Chief Ivan Blunka scored an imposing 56 points on Saturday, Newhalen still came out on top. Newhalen had just enough and edged Chief Ivan Blunka out 58-56.
Sand Point's victory bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Newhalen, the win got them back to even at 2-2.
Sand Point and Newhalen were neck-and-neck in their previous meeting back in March of 2023, but Sand Point came up empty-handed after a 54-53 loss. Can Sand Point avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
