Two dominant backs in Dk Garza and Aiden Zavala are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Alamo Heights Mules will welcome the Tivy Antlers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Tivy will challenge a team with plenty of momentum: Alamo Heights extended their winning streak to four on Friday. The Mules took their game with ease, bagging a 69-7 victory over McCollum. Given the Mules' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 156th, while the Cowboys are ranked 779th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Alamo Heights to victory, but perhaps none more so than Easton Stone, who threw for 184 yards and three TDs, and also rushed for 31 yards and one score. Another rusher making a difference was Steffen Torreira, who rushed for 119 yards and one touchdown on only five carries.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Alamo Heights was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 324 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 161 rushing yards in ten consecutive contests dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Tivy). They blew past McCollum 63-14 last Friday. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 42-14.
Tivy's win came from a few key players Alamo Heights will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was President Calamaco, who picked up 137 receiving yards and a pair of scores. He showed off some serious burst, cutting upfield on a catch for 61 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Steven Collier, who rushed for 133 yards and one TD while picking up 7.8 yards per carry.
Tivy didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Josh Wheatfall led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Tivy's win bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Alamo Heights, their victory bumped their record up to 8-1.
The upcoming game will be a clash of competing strengths. Alamo Heights has deployed a run-first offense that has averaged 282.6 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, Tivy has preferred to attack from the air: they average 318 passing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Friday? There's only one way to find out.
Everything came up roses for Alamo Heights against Tivy when the teams last played back in November of 2024, as the squad secured a 39-7 win. Do the Mules have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Antlers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
