The Marionville Comets will venture away from home to face off against the Lockwood Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Tuesday, Marionville made easy work of Pierce City and carried off a 13-7 win. The Comets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by six runs or more this season.
Maggie Murphy was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted over her last 11 contests. The team also got some help courtesy of Hannah Oczkus, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Murphy wasn't the only one making solid contact: Marionville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Lockwood was able to grind out a solid victory over Sarcoxie on Wednesday, taking the game 5-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Tigers.
Kallie Griffin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on one hit and racked up 13 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Lockwood's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Asa Lasater, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple was Lasater's first of the season. Mekenzie Weimer was another, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.
Marionville is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.6 runs over those games. As for Lockwood, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-3.
Marionville couldn't quite finish off Lockwood when the teams last played back in March and fell 6-4. Can the Comets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
