Patrick County is 8-2 against Floyd County since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Cougars will head out to take on the Buffaloes at 5:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
It was a proper cat-fight when Patrick County duked it out with Radford on Friday. The Cougars never let the Bobcats get on the board and left with a 17-0 victory. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Bobcats recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Hayden Lawless made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Journey Moore, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March. Lacey Sutphin also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Patrick County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Floyd County made easy work of Bassett on Thursday and carried off a 16-2 victory.
Like Patrick County, Floyd County also got a great game from a two-way player: Emma Biesterveld. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Biesterveld was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Ava DeJesus was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Lilly Gillispie, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Patrick County's record is now 12-3. As for Floyd County, their record now sits at 9-3.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Patrick County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .331. However, it's not like Floyd County struggles in that department as they've averaged .344. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Patrick County suffered a grim 8-1 defeat to Floyd County when the teams last played last Wednesday. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
