Football Recap: Mcdonogh Wins High-Profile Game Against St. Mary's

McDonogh faced St. Mary in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Eagles took their game with ease, bagging a 41-0 win over the Saints. The Eagles pushed the score to 28-0 by the end of the third, a deficit the Saints had little chance of recovering from.

McDonogh's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Braeden Palazzo led the charge by throwing for 182 yards and four TDs, while also punching in one touchdown on the ground. That's the most passing touchdowns Palazzo has posted since back in October of 2024. McDonogh's leading receiver Carlos Ferguson was Palazzo's top target yet again, picking up 105 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

McDonogh's run defense was locked in: St. Mary's could only muster -0.1 yards per carry. The team can thank Nick Abrams II for the heroic effort on defense: he. McDonogh didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 6.3.

McDonogh's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. Abrams II was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself. He has been hot recently, having also posted six or more total tackles the last four times he's played.

The victory made it two in a row for McDonogh and bumps their season record up to 4-1. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 44.5 points over those games. As for St. Mary's, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-2.

Coming up, McDonogh will take on Mount St. Joseph at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Gaels' defense has only allowed 8.4 points per game this season, so the Eagles' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for St. Mary's, they are taking a road trip to face off against Archbishop Spalding at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Saints will need to watch out since the Cavaliers have now posted at least 31 points in their last three matchups.
