Anthony Davis' whirlwind summer began to spin out of control Wednesday after a Chicago Sun-Times story suggested the 6-foot-9 forward's commitment was for sale with a price tag of $200,000.
Davis, rumored to be leaning toward Kentucky and a rising senior at Perspectives Charter/Calumet (Chicago, Ill.), was a complete unknown until April. He took the summer circuit by storm and is now being talked about by several respected recruiting analysts as the No. 1 prospect in America.
Glenn Davis of SportsGrid.com has a rundown of the firestorm the Sun-Times story created.
And that was published before the real drama began. Late Wednesday night, the University of Kentucky took the rare step of responding in very public fashion with this story and letter published on the Wildcats' official athletics site, UKAthletics.com.
MaxPreps will take a stab at getting some reaction from Davis on Friday as he is expected to participate in the Nike Global Challenge in Hillsboro, Ore.
More on Anthony Davis situation: Original Sun-Times story (edited) / Chicago Tribune
* MaxPreps.com reported on the commitments of Branden Dawson to Michigan State and Darrun Hilliard to Villanova on Wednesday.
* LaDontae Henton, a 6-foot-6 forward from Eastern (Lansing, Mich.), has committed to Dayton according to the Lansing State Journal. On the heels of an outstanding 2010 recruiting class, this is another encouraging pick-up for the Flyers.
Henton is an overachiever at the high school level, averaging 24.8 points and 14.5 rebounds per game as a junior. He is probably closer to 6-4 than his oft-listed height of 6-6. He plays like a rugged power forward but can defend in the backcourt and frontcourt.
* Kansas State added its second recruit in less than a week with Cedar Hill (Cedar Hill, Texas) power forward Thomas Gipson, according to the Kansas City Star among other media outlets. Florida 7-footer Adrian Diaz gave a pledge to the Wildcats over the weekend. Gipson is a 6-7, 235-pound bruiser who has spent the summer with Texas Bluechips Navy.
* Ouch. Memphis' No. 2 overall recruiting class of 2010 looks like it is going to take a hit by losing Will Barton. More on Barton's situation from the Memphis Commercial Appeal and Gary Parrish of CBS.
