After flying high against the Hebbronville Longhorns last Tuesday, the Mathis Pirates came back down to earth. Mathis fell just short of Odem by a score of 38-36. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Mathis has suffered yet this season.
Despite the loss, Mathis still got an impressive performance from Ashton Quesada, who scored 17 points along with two steals. Quesada has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times he's played. Arik Cuellar was another key contributor, scoring six points along with seven rebounds.
Mathis has been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 11-11 record this season. As for Odem, their win bumped their record up to 10-13.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mathis will face off against George West at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully George West focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up ten on Friday. As for Odem, they will head out on the road to take on Goliad at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Goliad will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive.
