Clay City and Edgewood are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Eels will head out to take on the Mustangs at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Clay City 4, Edgewood 2.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
On Wednesday, Clay City beat Linton-Stockton 6-1. The Eels haven't had any issues with the Miners recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Lizzy Sinders spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Clay City let Karlee Smith and Bri Rexrode run wild. Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one double, while Rexrode went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Rexrode a new career-high.
Meanwhile, Edgewood came tearing into Thursday's game with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.2 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Clovers with a sharp 12-2 victory. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won eight contests by six runs or more so far this season.
ALLY BLAND was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). BLAND was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, ADDISON YEARBY was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-4. Another player making a difference was OLIVIA McPHERSON, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs.
Edgewood kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive matches.
Edgewood's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games. As for Clay City, their record now sits at 11-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Clay City has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Edgewood struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Clay City skirted past Edgewood 1-0 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eels since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
