The San Elizario Eagles's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fifth straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 60-17 loss at the hands of Riverside. San Elizario was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-7.
When it comes to explaining why San Elizario lost, one person who can't be blamed is Maya Contreras. Despite the final result, she scored eight points along with 19 rebounds and five blocks. That was a full 47.1% of San Elizario's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Riverside's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Hazel Veloz led the charge by scoring 17 points along with seven steals. Veloz hasn't dropped below two steals for seven straight games. Another player making a difference was Yazmin Rios, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and five steals.
San Elizario has not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-12 record this season. As for Riverside, the victory (which was their 21st in a row) raised their record to 23-1.
San Elizario will head out on the road to face off against Mountain View at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mountain View will be looking to keep their four-game home win streak alive. Riverside will take on Clint at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Clint is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
