Morgantown is a perfect 8-0 against Preston since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Mohigans will host the Knights at 6:30 p.m. The last four games Morgantown has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Morgantown is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: John Marshall, who was ranked third at the time (Morgantown was ranked second). The Mohigans fell just short of the Monarchs by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday. That's two games in a row now that the Mohigans have lost by just one run.
MADISON WISMAN and CARPER MESSERLY did some serious damage despite the final result: WISMAN got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one run, while MESSERLY went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. KIRA SMITH was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Preston's good fortune finally ran out on Monday. They fell 8-5 to Lincoln.
Mckenzie Price was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Sophie Zinn was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Rhylinn Sanders, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Preston's defeat dropped their record down to 7-11. As for Morgantown, their loss dropped their record down to 15-6.
Morgantown came out on top in a nail-biter against Preston in their previous matchup back in March, sneaking past 5-4. Will the Mohigans repeat their success, or do the Knights have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
