Mt. Hope and Classical are an even 3-3 against one another since September of 2016, but not for long. The Huskies will head out on the road to take on the Purple at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Mt. Hope is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. Their defense stepped up to hand East Greenwich a 34-0 shutout. Winning may never get old, but the Huskies sure are getting used to it with their eighth in a row.
A big part of Mt. Hope's win came down to the chemistry between Will Francis and his top target Robert Annis. Francis rushed for 140 yards and three scores on only 13 carries while Annis gained 238 total yards and two touchdowns. Annis' longest rush was for an impressive 60 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.
Mt. Hope was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 372 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 170 rushing yards in eight consecutive matchups.
Mt. Hope didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Chase Savinon and Nick Rogers. Mt. Hope got some further help from Preston Brodd: he forced one fumble, made 12 total tackles, and defended three passes.
Meanwhile, Classical faced Johnston in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Purple claimed a resounding 42-7 victory over the Panthers. The Purple haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
The critical scores for Classical came from Tahmeed Moshood, Josiah Nyakoon, Coby Tavares, Parker Howley, Silas Mckay, and Bam Adebayo.
Mt. Hope's record now sits at 8-2. As for Classical, their record is now 10-0.
Mt. Hope and Classical were almost perfectly matched up in their previous meeting back in September, but Mt. Hope suffered an agonizing 18-17 loss. Can the Huskies avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
