The South Portland Red Riots are taking a road trip to challenge the Cheverus Stags at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. South Portland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
South Portland came out on top against Falmouth on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive 15-run first inning. The Red Riots were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over the Navigators. The Red Riots haven't had any issues with the Navigators recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.
Rachel DiMauro and Maegan Berry made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, DiMauro tossed two innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Berry struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). The dominant performance also gave DiMauro a new career-high in strikeouts (four). At the plate, DiMauro got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, two RBI, and one double, while Berry got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs.

South Portland hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Cheverus is still undefeated this season after their match against Gorham on Tuesday, but Gorham came as close as anyone has to beating them. The Stags narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Rams 2-0. Those two runs were actually the fewest the Stags have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
The result came thanks to Addison DeRoche's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
Cheverus pushed their record up to 6-0 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for South Portland, the victory was their first at home , bumping their record up to 2-5.
Both South Portland and Cheverus just can't seem to miss. The Red Riots have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. However, it's not like Cheverus struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 1.5 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South Portland might still be hurting after the 13-0 loss they got from Cheverus when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Red Riots avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
