The Clay Blue Devils will venture away from home to challenge the Fleming Island Golden Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Clay is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Clay took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. They walked away with a 4-1 win over St. Augustine.
Levi Chmura spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Cole Carnell, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Fleming Island lost 13-3 to Nease on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Fleming Island saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caden Swartz, who scored a run while going 2-for-3. Swartz also put up a double, which was his first of the season.
Even though they lost, Fleming Island was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .421. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .310 or higher in three consecutive matches.
Clay has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. Fleming Island's defeat dropped their record down to 4-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Clay has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.1 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Fleming Island struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Clay skirted past Fleming Island 7-6 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Clay since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
