Wray and Akron are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but likely not for long. The Eagles will head out on the road to face off against the Rams at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wray is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Wray's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They didn't even let Holyoke on the board, marking the Eagles' second-straight 13-0 shutout. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Gabe Kechter was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Kechter was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Broderick Kite, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-1. That stolen base marked the first that he snagged this season. Another player making a difference was Brodie Riggleman, who scored a run while going 1-for-1.
Meanwhile, Akron gave up the first runs on Saturday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with an 11-6 victory over Merino.
Like Wray, Akron also got a great game from a two-way player: Jax Kusel. Throwing, Kusel tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Caleb Poss pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. At the plate, Kusel went 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Poss scored a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Jakzon Livesay was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Mason Porteus was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
Akron always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Akron's record is now 7-2. As for Wray, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Wray has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Akron struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Wray couldn't quite finish off Akron in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 and fell 3-1. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
