The South Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Maize South Mavericks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. South is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
Last Friday, South was beaten by Eisenhower 56-7. While losing is never fun, South can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas football rankings (they are ranked 139th, while Eisenhower is ranked 11th).
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Maize South's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 35-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of Derby.
Despite the defeat, Maize South got a solid performance out of Ladislao Jaimes iii, who threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns.
South's defeat was their fourth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 0-7. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 12-1 Maize and 6-1 Derby (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 87.4% over those games). As for Maize South, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-2.
South was taken down by Maize South 56-27 when the teams last played back in October of 2022. Can South avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
