Caston is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Northfield a four-game streak of away losses dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Friday. The Caston Comets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Northfield Norsemen at 5:30 p.m. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Caston couldn't beat North Judson-San Pierre on Tuesday even though they stacked four runs on them in the first inning. The Comets took a 10-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bluejays. Comets fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Bluejays since on Tuesday.
Hadlie Coffing was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and six unearned) runs off eight hits. Coffing was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season.
In other batting news, Avery Baldwin and Myli Rude did some serious damage despite the final result: Baldwin got on base in all three of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one double, while Rude went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That run was Baldwin's first of the season. Natalie Warner was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Northfield fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Wabash on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Apaches by a score of 7-6.
Emma Warnock spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and three unearned) runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Bella Myers was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Another player making a difference was Kirsten Rife, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
Northfield's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Caston, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-7.
Caston took their victory against Northfield in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-1 score. Do the Comets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Norsemen turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
